Freedom of religion is not Freedom from Religion and that phrase seems to be getting a lot of play lately. Again I have to wonder why such a fundamental idea seems so hard to understand. People it is time for us to tell our government and our schools our religious beliefs, although they may not share them are ours and our children’s and they have no right to tell anyone not to practice nor speak about them. It is high time that this idea is taught correctly, the church (any church) does not have a place in government, does not mean it does not have a place in our hearts and they as a body who is there to protect us as citizens have a duty to also protect whatever we believe and our right to believe it.
Any politician that says one religion is better or worse than any other should not be in office. Any judge that supports the idea of no religious art in government buildings should have his education checked, it is part of our history and part of us whether we believe or not, religion and all of its precepts helped mold us as a people and should be part of the open dialogue, it is this lack of religion that causes much of the crime in this country as many people have no moral center any more, this is because religion is no longer part of their moral lessons, maybe it should be.
All religions are equal under the law, not nonexistent and I would like to remind our administration that to say religion is bad in any institution in any form is telling me as a citizen that I am not intelligent enough to make my own choices. Well I am, and so are the other 330 million Americans.
By the way Atheism is not a religion in fact by definition it is the lack of religion and any atheist who believes that religion was not part of what formed their opinion or part of their history needs to go back to school they didn’t pay attention in history class. No one is or should tell anyone else what to believe but no one should criticize anyone else for their beliefs nor should they deny that those beliefs ,all beliefs helped form this country and are part of its history whether they like that or not.
There are many things in American history that I cringe about but I understand they are events that happened and if I want to learn about my people I must learn the bad with the good and understand those parts make up part of the legacy I have been given. Religion is no different and we all need to accept that about each other. Put back the religious statues in our courts and allow prayer and Bible/Koran reading in our schools and accept that faith or no faith is part of the human condition.
