Now I ask my readers, why does a State of the United States have to pass a law to ensure religious freedom? Isn’t that one of the founding ideas of our nation? Well the reason is simple the Federal Government is no longer using the constitution and the protections for citizens as a guide to their actions. Store owners who choose to stand on a religious principle are being forced to deny those same principles and work for those they disagree with; I give you a bakery that was forced to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. I do not necessarily agree with the store owner’s logic but I do agree they can serve whomever they choose, for whatever reason they choose. The couple was free to find another bakery who would serve their needs and I am also sure there are many who would. What I do not understand is why the Federal Government or any government was involved with this dispute at all.
Well the answer is pretty simple I guess the federal government wants the citizens to know they know what’s best and people should act accordingly, except this flies in the face of true freedom doesn’t it. So we come to the State of Michigan who creates a state law to protect an already protected personal freedom. This implies to me a couple of things that are very important to all citizens of this once great nation:
1. We no longer are a United States, The idea that our states hold an underlying unity is breaking apart and with it our nation will slowly erode. This is the slippery slope most Conservatives scream about and they are unfortunately correct. The more states must act to repair federal interference the less united we will be until we are just 50 separate countries pretending to have something in common.
2. The Federal Government has forgotten completely that it is suppose to be a binding entity with limited power. Once the Federal government takes over all of the states powers what makes this country different from let’s say the Soviet Union? A giant lumbering entity where only a few have power and resources and the rest suffer at their whims?
3. As we create these laws to protect already protected rights we slowly degrade the constitution in such a way that it makes it almost unnecessary or so the argument will be and once gone we will live at the hands of law makers who can change what freedoms you or I have by a simple vote.
The States have powers for a reason and should exercise those powers regularly but alas the Federal Government for about a hundred years has been taking away those powers and adding to its own tool box, creating a nation that spies on its own citizens, Allows the IRS to be used as a weapon and allows a President to legislate from his office without congressional consent. Maybe it is time for the States to stop passing redundant laws and protections and force the Federal Government to act as it was intended by the Constitution. Maybe it is time for each citizen to understand that more power in one person’s hands may not be a good thing, remember power corrupts and absolute Power corrupts absolutely.
