Now I am not for gratuitous anything being shown to our children but lets face some facts here, fifteen year olds have seen the history channel which plays holocaust footage all the time and no one is losing their minds.
Racism and segregation are part of this country’s history and it is appropriate to teach the history of these concepts to our children. Moral indignation after the fact does not help anyone. Yes we should be outraged if someone does these things today but how do our children know what is appropriate and what is not if they do not know the history of the nation that tells the why of things.
The reality of this situation is this, A teacher trying to do his job was suspended because an administrator was afraid of the truth, which means the administrator was more worried about reaction then about teaching. Should the administrator have his job, if it were my child’s school district I think I would be looking to reinstate the teacher and fire the administrator. I say this because we as citizens have complained about our schools ability to teach our children then when a good teacher steps up and tries we allow some administrator who is afraid of a response shut them down. Michigan in this case do the right thing and rehire that history teacher, give him a raise and fire the administrator and find someone who believes in education and is not afraid to allow good teachers to teach.
There are some horrible things in our countries past but whether we like that or not it is part of our history and should be taught as part of our history. Knowledge is power, lets empower our children not hinder them.
