The first duty of man is to think for himself, such a wonderful observation but how many of us fail to take that duty into account when we look at the political life of this country. Many of us simply vote from the same habit we brush our teeth, I am a liberal so I have always voted liberal or I am conservative so I have always voted conservative but what does that really mean to us? Have you asked yourself lately what you really think? What you really believe?
The first duty of man is to think for himself, to send an original thought out into the universe for others to cherish or attack, a child of sorts with a life that will bear its own fruit. Have you told someone what you believe lately knowing they may not agree and then stood by that thought, defending it as if it were a your offspring, for it is, the child of your mind, that which will give you a legacy if it is worthy of the fight.
The first duty of man is to think for himself, have you stood resolutely against someone in the political arena that you may normally agree with because you know deep down in your soul you are right and they are wrong or did you cower away like a beaten puppy, to hide under your mothers protection. Cowering until others forgot your stand so that you may resume the habits you call living?
It is in living, actual living, which is the motion without knowing the outcome that we become the best version of ourselves. It is in the creation of a thought and seeing it through as it takes shape and then shapes other thoughts that we have really created something, something no one can ever take away, for a thought is boundless and is so powerful it may change the world but it is not a physical thing to steal away. A government can try to control your conveyance of a thought but it can never control the thought itself and that is what makes it so dangerous. Men can be controlled through many guises but a thought cannot be controlled as it burrows its way into the brains it comes in contact with. The meaning of the words put together in such a way as the world will never forget. A whisper that turns into a roar, the very thing the government cannot control is the thing that if not careful in the end will destroy it. Our founding fathers understood the power of thought and included the first Amendment in the Bill of Rights, not as a gift to us as citizens but a reminder to the government that no matter what we will speak our minds and God has allowed us to convey our ideas and once conveyed they cannot be controlled. Take away our freedom and it will be the whisper of freedom that becomes the weapon of patriots.
The first duty of man is to think for himself, what a wonderful way to be, free as the whisper of freedom drifts upon your ears and seeks your thoughts to join with others and then leave you to become something bigger, something better. Our first duty is to think for ourselves remember that when any politician tells you what you should believe and let you thoughts free and fulfill the destiny of your first duty to yourself.
